Were your forefathers homesteaders in Eastern Saskatchewan?

Would you like to know the homestead history of your farm?

West of the 2nd Homestead Records has original documents and correspondence of the homestead process.

For each quarter section that was homesteaded under the federal Homestead Act (1872), we have primary source documents and correspondence of many applicants who attempted to prove up their homesteads.

The homestead patent document (and supporting documentation) of successful applicants is held by Saskatchewan Archives. We have other documents and correspondence for both unsuccessful and successful homestead applicants.

For each quarter section available to be homesteaded, we also have the correspondence of others who expressed an interest in  homesteading the quarter section.

Each piece of land has a different story. Our records include one-of-a-kind personal documents such as applications to homestead, letters chronicling homestead life, homestead inspector’s reports and legal documents such as liens, and certificates of title.

The database also includes the names of settlers in the area who have made various declarations on behalf of the homesteader.

These files contain valuable family stories of success and failure that have never before been available.

Please contact us with the name of a homesteader or with the legal land description (section/township/range) you wish to research and we will search our records and provide you with a list of the documents that we have.

For each document of interest  we will provide a crisp copy to pass down to your descendants. The prices vary depending upon the nature of the document. These records will give your family a greater sense of their heritage and are a powerful tool in understanding the origin of your farm.

Our records cover only the area west of the second meridian. This extends west of the Manitoba/Saskatchewan border to approximately the centre of the province of Saskatchewan.
